{"id":96658,"date":"2005-12-27T02:56:00","date_gmt":"2005-12-27T02:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a5bf62d6-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2005-12-27T02:56:00","modified_gmt":"2005-12-27T02:56:00","slug":"a5bf62ef-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/a5bf62ef-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Retirement Fund hires PSS legal counsel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NMI Retirement Fund decided last week to hire Public School System legal counsel Karen Klaver.<\/p>\n<p>The Fund board of trustees approved Klaver\u2019s employment during a meeting Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Fund administrator Karl T. Reyes said yesterday that Klaver was one of three lawyers who responded to the Fund\u2019s job vacancy announcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was chosen by the board,\u201d said Reyes.<\/p>\n<p>He said that, based on consultation with Klaver, she would not be able to leave PSS until about February 2006 due to pending cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was anticipated that she\u2019d be able to begin next month but looks like it won\u2019t take place until February,\u201d said Reyes.<\/p>\n<p>The Fund offers no more than $65,000 as annual salary for a legal counsel position.<\/p>\n<p>Klaver previously worked as a Supreme Court clerk. She joined the Attorney General\u2019s Office before joining PSS about two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The Fund, meantime, has had no legal counsel for over a year now.<\/p>\n<p>Klaver\u2019s entry comes amid a decision by the Fund board to file a lawsuit against the central government for not paying its outstanding dues to the Fund.<\/p>\n<p>The government owes the Fund $85 million in employer contributions covering December 2001 to the present.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the Fund said that, although the administration pays its contribution, any amount it remits is credited to the oldest unpaid account.<\/p>\n<p>The Fund reported collecting over $56 million from the government from October 2001 to September 2005 but this was credited to previous debts covering fiscal years 1998 to 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Fund officials also said that the government ceased paying its dues altogether from August 1999 to September 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the Fund administrator said that the government is four pay periods behind, which translates to over $3 million.<\/p>\n<p>He said the government usually pays $835,000 to $850,000 per pay period.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The NMI Retirement Fund decided last week to hire Public School System legal counsel Karen Klaver.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-96658","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/96658","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=96658"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/96658\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=96658"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=96658"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=96658"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
