In light of the upcoming New Year Holiday, the Department of Public Safety has issued the following safety tips:<\/p>\n
* Adults should supervise children who light firecrackers.<\/p>\n
* Light firecrackers away from the house.<\/p>\n
* Don\u2019t explode firecrackers along busy roads or highways.<\/p>\n
* Don\u2019t burn tires or trash for the purpose of exploding firecrackers. Aside from being dangerous, burning of tires or trash needs a permit from the Fire Department.<\/p>\n
* If you get hurt due to a firecracker, call 911 or go straight to the hospital.<\/p>\n
The CNMI OSHA Consultation Program, along with the federal-based OSHA Region IX Office, also issued the following guidelines on the safe handling of fireworks.<\/p>\n
For Display Operators<\/p>\n
* Make sure personnel are trained and competent.<\/p>\n
* Obtain required licenses, permits and inspections.<\/p>\n
* Maintain display site security and communications.<\/p>\n
* Wear protective gear and proper clothing.<\/p>\n
* Prohibit accidental ignition sources.<\/p>\n
* Properly install mortar boxes, racks and drums.<\/p>\n
* Keep fireworks cartons closed.<\/p>\n
* Keep fireworks dry and in good condition.<\/p>\n
* Always handle fireworks carefully.<\/p>\n
* Stay away from loaded mortars.<\/p>\n
Retail Fireworks Sales<\/p>\n
* Keep exits clear and accessible.<\/p>\n
* Know all exit routes.<\/p>\n
* Maintain view of fireworks.<\/p>\n
* Know alarm procedures.<\/p>\n
* Know fire extinguisher location and operation.<\/p>\n
* Remove and dispose of damaged fireworks.<\/p>\n
* Remove loose pyrotechnic powder promptly.<\/p>\n
* Use only non-sparkling tools; do not use of sales area.<\/p>\n
* Do not allow smoking within 50 feet of sales area.<\/p>\n
* Keep facilities secure.<\/p>\n
