Mount Carmel School teacher Julieta D. Cunanan has been nominated by her students for the most prestigious teacher award in the country: the Who\u2019s Who Among America\u2019s Teachers\u00ae.<\/p>\n
National Academic Affairs chair Parke H. Davis said in a letter to Cunanan in November that she was nominated and selected for the award because she made a big difference in the lives of many of her students and former students.<\/p>\n
Davis said that only 5 percent of the nation\u2019s teachers are honored in each edition of Who\u2019s Who and less than 2 percent are included in more than one edition. <\/p>\n
\u201cStudents are clearly sending you a message of how special you are,\u201d said Davis.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am very surprised [but] at the same time honored,\u201d said Cunanan when she learned of her nomination\u2014a first for her. \u201cThis is the best holiday present for me.\u201d <\/p>\n
She said yesterday afternoon that she is elated by the honor when she received the plaque last month. \u201cCunanan is recognized and honored for her contributions made to the education of the nation\u2019s youth,\u201d says the plaque.<\/p>\n
Cunanan, who has teaching in the CNMI for 27 years now, is up for retirement soon. She taught in CNMI public schools for 25 years and is now on her second year at MCS teaching English Literature and Composition and NMI History.<\/p>\n
She also has been active in several community services that she said have been her mission in the CNMI. Among her contributions are participations in the Adopt-A-Beach Program, Ecology Day, CNMI Beautification Day, American Red Cross Walkathon, Trash-a-thon, volunteer work for the Homework Center, Catechism, and CHC volunteers, among many others.<\/p>\n
She\u2019s also involved in coordinating school activities, functions and its community service participation. She is the adviser and the force behind last year\u2019s \u201c1st MCS Mr. and Ms. Model of the Year\u201d.<\/p>\n
Cunanan is the better half of Wilson Cunanan and the mother of two children, Christopher and Christine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
