Gov. Benigno R. Fitial urged Commonwealth residents yesterday to continue supporting the American Red Cross, as he proclaimed March as Red Cross Month.<\/p>\n
\u201cI urge all citizens of the Commonwealth to continue to give your time, blood and money, to make a difference in the humanitarian fabric of this community. Because when we help the American Red Cross, we help each other,\u201d read a portion of the governor\u2019s proclamation.<\/p>\n
Fitial\u2019s recognized the contributions of the local Red Cross chapter in preventing, preparing for, and responding to disasters. \u201cIt has been the place where compassionate people freely give their time and talent to help prevent and ease human suffering among friends, neighbors, and even strangers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In 2005, the NMI Chapter responded to numerous local emergencies, assisted 48 military families and trained 1,471 people in lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid.<\/p>\n
The governor also acknowledged CNMI citizens who made contributions to fund the cost of providing relief to those in need, \u201cwhether through one of Chapter\u2019s large special events like Club 200 or Walkathon, or by just dropping loose change in a coin box.<\/p>\n
With recent natural calamities causing widespread damage throughout the islands and elsewhere in the world, the Red Cross now plays an even more vital role in society, he added.<\/p>\n
In view of this, Fitial called on the local community to support the NMI Chapter of the Red Cross.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of NMI Chapter to building a better quality of life in the Commonwealth, we must also look forward and each do our part to ensure that the Red Cross remains vital, ready to help us prevent, prepare for and respond to the unknown challenges that lie ahead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The NMI Chapter of the American Red Cross currently has nearly 100 active volunteers and more than 1,000 donors. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
