Eighty-one CNMI service providers recently finished a systemwide training on Interviewing, Counseling, and Case Management Skills.<\/p>\n
Dr. Crystal Mills of the Eastern Michigan University College of Health and Human Services Department of Social Work Continuing Education and Lisa Natividad, a Guam-based private practitioner, led the workshop, which was also facilitated by the Area Health Education Center Department of Health.<\/p>\n
Dr. Faye Untalan, AHEC director, said the training aimed to develop the skills of CNMI personnel who provide direct services to the community members. <\/p>\n
\u201cThese skills cut across systems of care, sharing common concepts and principles for better services delivery and improve the competencies of our staff to deliver effective service,\u201d Untalan said.<\/p>\n
She said the training will hopefully improve human service practices in the CNMI.<\/p>\n
Among the government and non-government organizations that participated were the Public School System, Department of Public Health, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, Karidat, Workforce Investment Agency, and Northern Marianas College. <\/p>\n
The training was held at the Aqua Resort Club\u2019s Rey Lounge and ended last Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are proud to have 81 participants who completed this training at varying levels of participation in two to nine days,\u201d said Untalan.<\/p>\n
The participants were from Saipan and Tinian. Untalan said the same training would be held on Rota in the future.<\/p>\n
The training consisted of lectures and laboratory exercises. Participants had to learn theory and practice interventions in a classroom situation. The participants also had a role-playing segment where they learned how to apply the theories discussed during the workshop. <\/p>\n
\u201cBoth lectures and the labs dealt with the communication skills social workers utilize in working with different sized systems for different purposes,\u201d reads part of the training syllabus.<\/p>\n
Untalan said the AHEC training was a collaborative effort with the Division of Public Health, Division of Youth Services, and PSS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
