Pacific Telecom, Inc. on Friday donated funds to non-profit groups and a student who will attend the Lead America leadership conference in the United States<\/p>\n
PTI manager for government affairs and public relations Tonie Apatang said the donations are part of the company\u2019s efforts to express gratitude to the community for its continued patronage of its products and services.<\/p>\n
Recipient of the donations Friday morning were the American Red Cross-CNMI chapter and the Saipan Swim Club. Apatang did not publicly disclose the amount of funds donated to both groups.<\/p>\n
Apatang congratulated the Red Cross for its Walkathon project, a fundraising event to support the group\u2019s mission to provide relief services during emergency situations and disasters.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Walkathon, it\u2019s a community event. A lot of people came and joined the Walkathon last Saturday. The donation is our way of saying thanks to the community,\u201d Apatang said.<\/p>\n
CNMI Red Cross executive director John Hirsh and Saipan Swim Club\u2019s Dirk Sharer received the donations on behalf of their respective groups. The groups expressed their gratitude to PTI for the donations.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone in the community was nervous when PTI took over Verizon because no one knew what to expect,\u201d Hirsh said. \u201cIt [donation] is really a testament of the commitment of the new owners [of the telecommunication company].\u201d<\/p>\n
In the afternoon, Apatang said PTI would give out cash donation to Mantasha Alam, a high school student on Saipan who will attend the Lead America in the United States this year.<\/p>\n
