Twenty-four young and vibrant candidates in this year’s Mount Carmel School’s 2006 Mr. and Ms. Model of the Year pageant will vie for the coveted title this Sunday at the Hotel Nikko Saipan Amphitheater.

The event will start at 5pm and tickets will also be available at the venue.

Model of the Year steering committee officer and teacher Julie Cunanan and steering committee officer Louise Concepcion said proceeds of the show would go toward the renovation and improvement of the school gym because MCS is also planning to construct its own multi-purpose center.

Twelve girls and 12 boys will compose this year’s contestants. The candidates are mostly from grades 8 to 12. Several of the candidates are members of school clubs and organizations such as Red Cross, Freshman Club, and sports team.

Candidate Jadine Sablan, 14, said she joined this year’s pageant to help promote student involvement for the betterment of the school community. Benjamin Babauta, also 14, added that the pageant is his means to meet new people and expand his horizon.

“When I look back, I want this experience to remind me of the fun experience I’ve had in high school,” said Mark Sonoda, 14.

Most of the candidates said they have joined the pageant to boost their self-esteem. “The experience will hopefully give me more confidence in myself,” said Michelle Cabrera.

Chandelle Mendoza, 14, added that meeting new people would provide her additional confidence and self-esteem.

Female candidates this year are Francine Babauta, Jalayne Benavente, Colleen Cabrera, Justalyn Camacho, Niana dela Cruz, Mendoza, Sablan, Esther Deleon Guerrero, Cabrera, Joana Quitugua, and Gabriella Palacios. In the male division, the contestants are David Kautz, Sonoda, Joseph Yamada, Donovan Chong, Babauta, James Anthony Webb, Champ Untalan, Christopher Ching, Justin Pangelinan, John Benavente, Calvin Yang and Wylie Paez.

The candidates will be competing in three categories: the national costume, sports and talent. Helping this year’s pageant are director Ernie Molina, choreographer Rommel Calcena, and stylists from Genoveva’s Beauty Salon.
