Young ballers show stuff in NYBA
Young cagers and cage belles had another opportunity to showcase their skills on the hard court as action continued in the 2006 NYBA Basketball League with three games yesterday morning at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Heading home on high notes were the Garapan Rollers I of the 12-and-nder division, the G-Rollers II of the 14-and-under divisions, and the Matansa Sparks I of the 16-and-under division.
The G-Rollers I had the honors of taking the court first, and had a big production from Lester Vertudez to beat sister-team G-II.
Vertudez was on fire in the two 10-minute halves and worked his way for 18 points while Michael Moran supported strong with nine points to help G-I win, 39-30.
Ed Manalili led G-II with 14 points while David Diaz pumped in 12 markers.
In the second game, G-II in the 14-and-under competition dominated and cruised to a 56-26 victory over the Sparks.
Having a big day on the court was G-I’s Jomar Danas, who had a fiesta as he sizzled for 17 points while also grabbing a whopping 19 rebounds to lead his team to victory. Mike Bondoc also had a solid game with 16 points and seven steals, while Derek Abraham hauled in 12 rebounds.
Eli Pangelinan led the Sparks with 10 points while Mart Sablan grabbed 10 rebounds.
In the final game of the day, Edwin Camacho almost recorded a triple-double and led the Sparks I over sister-team Sparks II, 76-56.
