$75K allotted to animal shelter on Saipan
Despite a budget allocation that is short of what it had expected, the Saipan Mayor’s Office can now proceed with the plan to build an animal shelter for stray cats and dogs in the CNMI.
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela said he is just thankful that the Legislature finally approved the funding for the completion of the animal shelter, which is in As Perdido. The mayor was expecting some $100,000 for the project.
Saipan Local Law 15-12 allocates a $250,000 budget for the Saipan Mayor’s Office. Of that amount, $75,000 is set aside for the repairs and renovation of the dog pound building.
Of the remaining amount, $75,000 will be used for operations and heavy equipment rentals, heavy equipment parts, and disposal of used oil, while $100,000 will be used for the purchase of new heavy equipment.
Tudela said he would be constantly communicating with the Department of Finance to establish an account for this appropriation.
He earlier said the $250,000 funding would be used for the construction, renovation, and improvement of the animal shelter, his office’s operational expenses and the shipment fees and other expenses involving the shipment of “used oil” from Lower Base to Guam.
In July this year, the Saipan Mayor’s Office signed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Lands and Natural Resources for the transfer of the DLNR Agricultural Station in As Perdido to the Mayor’s Office. The program will use the 20-feet by 45-feet facility to keep stray dogs.
