A motorist was killed after a van he was driving slammed into a telephone pole and a fire hydrant on Beach Road, Garapan, Sunday morning.

The victim, a 30-year-old Korean, was pronounced dead by a doctor at the Commonwealth Health Center at 8:35am on the same day, according to the Department of Public Safety yesterday.

DPS acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr. said the possible cause of death is of natural causes.

Blas said traffic investigators ruled out alcohol and speed as factors in the crash.

Blas said the preliminary investigation showed that the man, driving a white 2000 Chevrolet Express passenger van, was traveling south along Beach Road. The van inexplicably encroached into the northbound lanes, struck a telephone pole then slammed onto a fire hydrant in front of Canton Restaurant.

Responding medics and rescue personnel found the motorist unresponsive in the driver’s seat. They immediately extricated him from the vehicle and transported him to CHC.

Meanwhile, DPS said yesterday that a traffic investigator determined that the driver of a blue 2005 Hyundai Accent who was seriously injured in the car crash in As Perdido Saturday night was intoxicated when the accident occurred.

The driver, Neprum Nesiu Siech, 33, a Chuukese, sustained lacerations to the face and complained of abdominal pain. He was admitted at CHC for further observation.

Blas said Siech will be charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, and refusal to submit to a blood test as well as other traffic violations.

Investigation conducted by Traffic Officer Joseph Magofna showed that the car was traveling east on As Perdido Road.

The car went off the roadway and hit a fixed object and came to rest on its top in the water drainage located on the eastbound shoulder of the road.

Siech was trapped in the driver’s seat.

Officer Magofna and responding medics and rescue personnel pulled Siech from the wrecked car.
