Santos, Oshima top Sunset Stress Free run
Distance runners Chris Santos and Mamiko Oshima were burning rubber Thursday evening en route to topping the Sunset Stress Free 5K Fun Run along Beach Road.
Santos, who was a member of the bronze medal-winning CNMI cross country team in the recent 6th Micronesian Games, was able to break ahead of the group and finish first overall with a time of 19:50.
Right behind him was Champ Untalan, who clocked in at 20:00, while Tom Lindon took third place in 20:07.
Nate Mateo and Matt Manacao followed in times of 20:39 and 20:59, while Vince Teregeyo and Josh Berger placed sixth and seventh in the men’s division with times of 23:26 and 23:44.
Max Simian and Alexander Racoma rounded up the men’s field as they clocked in at 24:31 and 25:16.
Fresh from winning the recent half marathon held in Marpi last month, Oshima conquered the shorter course in 21:06 to become the first female finisher and sixth overall.
Elisa Long finished a strong second in 22:53, while Inaugural Saipan Marathon winner Monica Yamaguchi placed third in 24:20. Irma Halaby finished fourth in 26:25, while youth runners Reylynn Sapong (29:21), Yvonne Bennett (38:38), and Yvette Bennett (38:40) followed.
The run began across the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. Runners ran to the turnaround point across Triple J Motors and backtracked for another 2.5 kilometers to finish the race.
The race, organized by Northern Marianas Athletics, served as a fundraiser for runners heading to Guam for the upcoming Cross Country Asia Pacific Regional Invitational on Oct. 27. The event will feature top youth distance runners in the region competing for supremacy.
Upcoming runs include the All Schools Cross Country Championships on Nov. 18, the Turkey Trot Fun Run on Thanksgiving morning, and the Christmas Island Relay on December.
