Northern Marianas Athletics is proud of the recent performances of local distance runners in the Asia Pacific Cross Country Invitational on Guam, and is already looking forward to next year’s competition.

This, according to NMA secretary general Robin Sapong, who served as coach for the group when on Guam competing against schools from Japan, Guam, Seoul, and Hong Kong.

“I’m very happy especially because this is the first year for us,” Sapong said. “These schools that we competed against, they’re use to this kind of big regional competition. So of course I’m proud of them.”

Sapong indicated that he has already received an invitation for next year’s event.

“This competition is by invitation only,” he said. “We needed to be invited and now, I’m hoping to have runners from the CNMI compete every year since we opened the door. I hope we can keep it going.”

Nate Mateo, Champ Untalan, Matt Manacao, Vince Teregeyo, and Har Tim Williams represented Marianas High School, while David Bautista, Gary Camacho, and Irwin Babauta represented Saipan Southern High School.

Marianas High School placed 12th in the team competition of the 5K fun run. Mateo placed 40th in 20:02, Untalan 42nd in 20:12, Manacao 78th in 22:26.18, Teregeyo 85th in 23:20.51, and Williams 90th in 23:47.

Saipan Southern was not eligible for team competition with only three runners. Bautista finished 63rd in 21:24.89, Camacho 75th in 22:14.66, and Babauta 92nd in 23:56.88.
