Sailors awarded Bronze Stars and other medals

[B]SANTA RITA, Guam[/B]—Sailors attached to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 5 were awarded medals yesterday for their heroism and dedication to duty.

The command held an awards ceremony at its compound on U.S. Naval Base Guam.

Lt. John Pinto and Chief Petty Officer Kevin Powell were presented Bronze Star Medals, while Petty Officer 2nd Class Jon Kristoffersen received a Bronze Star Medal with Valor in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Bronze Star Medals are awarded to people who distinguished themselves by heroic, meritorious achievement or service in connection with military operations against an armed enemy or opposing armed force.

The command also recognized other sailors who assisted in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom Philippines.

Petty Officer 1st Class Aaron Weissman, Petty Officer 1st Class Thomas Loftus, Petty Officer 2nd Class Nick Tabacco, Petty Officer 3rd Class Kenneth Wieners, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Dustin Hughes were presented Army Commendation Medals.

Petty Officer 1st Class Sean O’Leary was awarded a Navy Commendation Medal with Valor.

Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Pawlusiak and Petty Officer 2nd Class Matt Strawn received Joint Service Achievement Medals.

Petty Officer 1st Class Sergio Schickler garnered an Army Achievement Medal.

Finally, for outstanding athletics and supporting the Navy’s Admiral Cup sporting events, Petty Officer 1st Class Shannon Blake was given a Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

The mission of EODMU 5, a forward-deployed mobile command, is to provide explosive ordnance disposal detachments throughout the Commander, Seventh Fleet area of responsibility to enable access for fleet, mine countermeasures, joint expeditionary and special operations forces. [B][I](PR)[/I][/B]
