After a month of waiting and follow-ups with the Department of Finance, the $75,000 intended to renovate and build an animal shelter for stray cats and dogs on Saipan has finally been remitted to the Saipan Mayor’s Office.

Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela, who earlier expressed frustration over the delay, is now all smiles after Finance remitted the fund to his office’s account on Monday.

“Now I feel very happy about it,” he said.

Despite a budget allocation that is short of what Tudela had proposed, the Saipan Mayor’s Office can now proceed with the plan to build the animal shelter. The mayor had been expecting some $100,000 for the project.

Tudela said his office is now preparing the release of a bid bulletin that would soon be published in major broadsheets on Saipan. He is looking at releasing the bid announcement sometime next week. The announcement would run for 15 to 30 days, after which the Mayor’s Office would select the best bidder. Tudela is now communicating with the Office of Procurement and Supply on this matter.

The proposed animal shelter will be located in As Perdido.

Saipan Local Law 15-12 allocated a $250,000 budget for the Saipan Mayor’s Office. Of that amount, $75,000 was set aside for the repairs and renovation of the dog pound building.

Of the remaining amount, $75,000 will be used for operations and heavy equipment rentals, heavy equipment parts, and disposal of used oil from Lower Base to Guam, while $100,000 will be used for the purchase of new heavy equipment.
