Some areas on Saipan experienced a power outage yesterday for a few minutes due to heavy rain.

Commonwealth Utilities Corp. spokesman Pamela Mathis told Saipan Tribune that the cause of the outage could be the downpour or trees hitting the wires.

“There’s no evidence of what hit the lines. We only know that something hit the lines,” Mathis said.

She said the Kiya 1 electrical grid automatically tripped off a 12:42pm, causing outages in Dandan, Fina Sisu, and Airport Road.

Mathis said power was restored to a portion of the grid in about 20 minutes while power in another portion was back after 30 minutes. Power in the affected areas was completely restored at 1:45pm.

The CUC spokesperson said an automatic trip off happens when something hits the high voltage electrical wires.

She said yesterday’s trip off occurred during very heavy rain in the vicinity.
