20 boats inspected, no violations found
The Department of Public Safety’s Boating Safety Section officers conducted a free courtesy inspection of 25 boats on Saipan this week.
As of Friday at 10am, Boating Safety officers checked three more boats at the Smiling Cove Marina, for a total of 25 boats inspected since Monday.
The officers made the courtesy inspection at Smiling Cove Marina, Sugar Dock, and Fishing Base as part of the Dec. 4 to 8 Boating Safety Week event.
BSS commander Sgt. Juan D. Diaz told Saipan Tribune Friday that the inspection showed that all have safety equipments and that no violations were found.
“It is a courtesy free inspection to make sure that all the boats have their safety equipment on board,” Diaz said.
The commander said that they want to make sure that boaters have their like jackets, flares, fire extinguisher and that their running light and VHF radio are in good working condition.
Aside from the courtesy inspection, boating safety officers also shared boating safety tips to San Antonio Elementary School, Joshua Elementary School, and Tanapag Elementary School students.
BSS noted that there were lesser distress boat reports, fewer vessel accidents, and no boat accident-related fatalities so far in the CNMI this year, compared to the previous two years.
