The House of Representatives has commended the Commonwealth’s first certified ophthalmic assistant.

The House members recently adopted a resolution recognizing Emilly N. Taitano for being the first CNMI resident to receive national credentials as a certified ophthalmic assistant.

Taitano is currently an ophthalmic assistant at the Marianas Eye Institute, where she has worked since October 1998.

In that year, the eye clinic launched a training program inviting ophthalmic assistants to enroll and attain certification in the field. Taitano availed of the opportunity. In October 2006, she passed the national certifying examination which covered the areas of history taking, basic skills and lensometry, patient services, basic tonometry, instrument maintenance, and general medical knowledge. The certification was issued by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.

“The House of Representatives…recognizes and congratulates Mrs. Emilly N. Taitano for being the first person in the CNMI to receive national credentials as a certified ophthalmic assistant,” read a portion of House Resolution 15-76. [I][B](Agnes E. Donato)
