Fitial KO’s Chong in first round
Kelvin “The Big Hit” Fitial will surely be remembered on Guam after his recent performance in Fury.
The CHOKECHAIN fighter represented Saipan the best he could, and shocked mix martial arts fans on Guam last Saturday after knocking out Manny “The Enforcer” Chong in the first round of their heavyweight fight.
Also competing and representing Saipan were Cuki Alvarez of Trench Tech Purebred Saipan and “Kill” Bill Saures of Dragon Tribe, and like Fitial, the two returned home with victories, giving Saipan a 3-0 record that night.
Fitial was phenomenal as he impressed many with his effort against Chong, who previously held a 3-0 record against fighters from Saipan.
The undefeated mark against Saipan was quickly erased courtesy of Fitial, who rocked his opponent for a knockout victory 1:36 into the first round.
“Kelvin took his long arms and was very aggressive in the very beginning. Manny landed a big left hook, but Kel didn’t drop. He kept fighting and caught Manny with a strong left hook and Manny got knocked out cold. It was a total knockout,” said Alvarez in a phone interview yesterday.
With the win, Fitial improves his MMA record to 4-3, with the victory over Chong his biggest yet.
Meanwhile, Alvarez was able to defeat Leo Singh of Chris Duenas Fight Club via unanimous decision to keep his perfect record intact.
The fight went the distance, with both fighters lasting throughout the three rounds. The first round featured both fighters throwing kicks and punches, with Alvarez getting cracked in the eye. Despite being on the receiving end of the blow, Alvarez refused to give in and managed to take down his opponent. Alvarez landed a couple of punches, cutting Singh on his eye. After the referee stopped the fight to check on the cut, the two resumed competing right before the round came to an end.
In the second round, Alvarez was able to earn crucial points by connecting on several right low kicks. The two again exchanged punches and kicks, with the round featuring a stand up battle until the end.
The third round was pretty similar to the second, with Alvarez again controlling the bout to earn the judges vote for the unanimous decision to improve his record to 5-0.
For his part, Saures was able to defeat Jimmy Asaison of Spike 22 Guam.
Saures was originally scheduled to face 315-lb. Mike Davis, but his opponent suffered an injury during warms up for the fight, resulting in a change of plans.
Alvarez said Davis was warming up and broke his wrist while punching a mitt.
With that, officials searched for a replacement, and despite the short notice, Apaison took the fight.
Alvarez said the two exchanged blows in the early stage of their fight, and Saures was able to gain control before mounting his opponent and unleashing a flurry of punches.
With Saures having his way, the referee stepped in and stopped the fight for a technical knockout victory.
Saures and Fitial were then scheduled to battle as they entered in a tournament-style competition, however, Saures injured his knuckles and was not able to battle.
