Teufel won the six-team battle dedicated to the underdogs of the sporting world on Sunday as the threesome defeated all comers to take the annual Rudy Rudeger Volleyball Tournament at Kilili Beach Park.

The sport of volleyball has grown in leaps and bounds this past year and the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association rolled out the green carpet for the mixture of the indoor and outdoor games where players are actually penalized for making good plays.

The co-ed Rudeger tournament format featured three-players per team picked through a random draw six-man event and Bruce Berline, Evan Hunsberger, and Francika Sperb meshed well together on the lawn by topping all teams that joined them on the court.

Teufel first defeated the Plum Smugglers, 17-15, to open up the tournament and followed with a 15-12 win over Skinfest before dropping Jon Cramer, Qamar Schuyler, and Luther Taylor of Membo, 15-13, in the finale.

Cramer and company started off well as Membo defeated Pathetic 15-11 in the first round before falling to Skinfest, 15-11. Fighting through the ranks of the loser’s bracket, Membo downed the Danglers, 18-16, and the Plum Smugglers, 16-14, before avenging their loss to Skinfest with a narrow two-point victory, 15-13, to reach the finals.

On the line was a heap of bragging rights and what many on the local volleyball scene deem as the ultimate trophy on Saipan, but the true winners are the future members of the CNMI’s Pacific Games team as all benefits from the tournament went directly to the NMIVA.
