Jhun Calma won the Fil-Taga Golfers Association’s December Ace of the Month Tournament last Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Marianas Country Club in Marpi.

Calma actually finished tied with March Ace Joe Miranda after both par-busters fired net scores of 69. Calma, however, took home the final monthly ace of the club for this year as Fil-Taga rules stipulate that players could only win once in a calendar year.

The winning score had Calma swing for a day’s third-best gross score of 84, which minus his 15 handicap, gave him a pristine score of three-under par 72.

The 13-handicap Miranda, for his part, accounted for the tournament’s second-best gross score of 82.

Edgar Abalos had the December Ace’s lowest gross score after besting Miranda by a stroke with his 81. The 11-handicap golfer, however had to settle for the day’s third-best net score with his 70.

Fil-Taga president Jun “Tiger” Dela Cruz, Senate Majority Leader Sen. Pete Reyes, and entrepreneur Ralph Yumul capped the Top 5 with net scores of 72, 74, and 74, respectively.

The other 11 players that took part in the December Ace, with their net scores in parenthesis, are as follows: Rey Ferraz (75); Nono Bostre (76), Ted Malaran (77); William Retardo (78); Ed Cabotaje (78); Mando Guban (79); Alsree Chiong (80); Nestor Siruelo (81); Glenna Palacios (81); Greg De Torres (82); and Jess Yumul (87).

Established in 1993, Fil-Taga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.

A Fil-Taga Ace of the Month champion is crowned monthly. Regular tournaments are scheduled once a month, normally every third Sunday. Green fees are in the $35 to $40 price range for most tournaments.
