Wahoo waiting for top anglers
One of Saipan’s most ardent anglers is calling out his counterparts to join him this weekend in search a winner on the water as John D. Guerrero is welcoming all to the first Wahoo Jackpot Derby.
So far Guerrero said that he has received roughly 25 verbal confirmations that there is no limit to the number of participants that may enter this Saturday’s derby
“The more the merrier. I look forward to seeing all the real fishermen on Saturday. May the best guys win,” he said.
To the best of his knowledge, Guerrero said that there has never been a derby dedicated solely to wahoo wrangling and he said that any excuse to spend a day on a boat is a good enough reason to host a tournament.
“I promised a group of old guys that I would do it. I like to follow through with what I commit to. Besides, derbies are fun and trolling is a great way to get away from everything and fish with the prospect of winning cash and bragging rights at the end of the day,” he said.
The cost to participate in the derby is $100 per boat and unlike some of the major happenings there is no fee for additional anglers. Another perk to this weekend’s event is that all of the entrance fees will go directly to the top anglers as 60 percent of the purse will go to the boat that catches the biggest wahoo, while the remaining 40 percent goes to the crew who bags the highest total number of wahoo caught.
Before any of the angling action gets underway there will be a captain’s meeting and registration at 5pm at the Smiling Cove Marina on Friday, Dec. 15. Guerrero said that all participants must show because he will not register any boats the following day.
Guerrero won’t have to host the derby alone as the Department of Fish and Wild Life, DPS Boating Safety, Emergency Management Office, Marianas Visitors Authority, and the Saipan Fishermen’s Association are sponsoring the event.
