Fiesta-Grand, DCAA are week’s finest
Fiesta-Grand Hotel and the men’s and women’s teams of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs drubbed all headliners in sports this past week.
Fiesta-Grand, the name of the combined Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan and Saipan Grand Hotel, won the 2nd Annual HANMI Cup Inter-Hotel Basketball League championship.
It did so after disposing of Pacific Islands Club, 87-72, in the do-or-die finale last Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
DCCA men’s and women’s squads, meanwhile, reigned supreme in the Inter-government Softball League after beating Aguaguat and Northern Marianas College-Proa, respectively.
The DCCA men were all business drowning Aguaguat with a tsunami of hits to cruise to a 43-11 win last Tuesday at the Miguel Basa “Tan Ge” Pangelinan Field.
DCCA women, meanwhile, used an eight-run bottom of the sixth scoring spree to score a come-from-behind 13-10 win over NMC last April 11 also at the Tan Ge field.
In other news, Salty Boyz coasted to a 6-0 blanking of PTI 83 in Game 3 of the finals of the Belau Amateur Softball Association Masters Softball League last Sunday at the Dandan Elementary School Field.
Pacific Oceania, meanwhile, went down five rungs to No. 68 in the latest Davis Cup standings following its 2-3 loss in the hands of Oman last weekend at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat.
Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan also held its first two American Red Cross swim lessons last April 5 and 12 and it averaged 60 swimmers.
Youth netter Ji Hoon Heo, for his part, advanced to the second round of the 2008 Lee Duk Hee Cup Korea International Junior Championships but lost to a Korean foe ranked 1,164 in the world junior rankings.
In bowling Kitz Barja, Gigi Zapanta, and Zack Cruz won the April editions of the MARPAC-sponsored monthly King, Queen, and Princes of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament held last Sunday and Monday at the Capital Bowling Center in Garapan.
In golf, Noriko Togawa and Shirlyn Jones topped the CNMI Women’s Golf Association Members Annual Two-Day Golf Tournament held over the weekend at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort.
The XTEARRA triathlon, 9th Annual Pacific Islands Club-Miller Lite Spring Co-ed 4-Person Beach Volleyball League, and the first leg of the preliminary trials of the 4th Annual McDonald’s All-Schools Track and Field Championship all also took part the past eight days.
The past week also saw the continuation of games in the SBA Open 8-Ball League, 3rd Annual Budweiser-Saipan Major League, Inaugural FMI Inter-Color Basketball League, and the Saipan Little League Baseball Association.
