My motives for supporting Pew’s proposal

Last week, I was called out by a local elder whom I shall not identify by name. I am more than moved to say thank you and I have no question in my mind that when you read this, you will know that I am speaking to you. I want to thank you for asking me to check my motives behind why I think that Pew’s proposed marine national park of the sea is a good proposal. You suggested that there must be something in it for me or else I wouldn’t be actively supporting Angelo Villagomez in his efforts to provide as much public information as possible as quickly as possible. I was wrong and you are right: I do have an ulterior motive. In fact, I have several.

1. The betterment of the CNMI

2. Preservation of the earth’s resources

3. Helping government to create the conditions necessary for me to help myself

For the betterment of the CNMI, I would like to see the people of the CNMI flourish in the spotlight of the world for something better than degradation and greed. I want to hear the pride and excitement in the stories from the children as they explain to a stranger how their people made tough choices early on and helped save the planet.

Wake up! If you aren’t sure what all the fuss is about, because you need someone to help you translate the information science is producing about what is happening to our precious Mother Earth’s resources, then let’s ask for help. I’ve offered some of the research that I’ve completed via this month’s cover story of MP Magazine, “CNMI National Monument – Priceless!” We are in dangerous times. If we don’t take responsibility for our actions today, we won’t have a planet tomorrow. What do you want for your children or your children’s children? This statement, in fact, reminds me of another’s comment to me last week regarding setting aside a no-take marine zone: “Let’s leave for our grandchildren to decide.” I didn’t respond to the speaker, but it made me very aware of the dangers we face when we isolate ourselves to non-action and ask others to take our burdens and risks for us.

Ultimately and on a very real level, my motivation is “right livelihood.” I want the opportunity to continue to make business in this community, a place that I call my home, and help make it so that others can too. I want to do so in a way that is sustainable and non-threatening to the islands or the people. We have one remaining, viable industry—tourism. We are not guaranteed this tourism, we are graced with it. It doesn’t happen magically, it happens because there are many businesses and people who contribute in an extended, tireless effort every day. I personally spend between 2-10 hours a week volunteering my time, energy and effort to MVA. There are others steeped much deeper by the graces of their employers who get more criticism than kudos for their relentless and unfailing efforts to resuscitate the only economic prosperity currently within our reach. Can you imagine having two full-time jobs, but only getting paid for one? Would you do it? Why or why not? What if doing it meant that you might get the chance next year to give your family something that you really want them to have?

I will leave you where I began, which is to say “Thank You!” to the elder who called me out on my motives for supporting the idea of a marine national park of the sea. I thought it only fair that I should not hold back this wisdom or confession, so offer it here for all to see, touch and feel. To the Legislature, please tell me what information that you need and we will see if we can get it for you so that you might reconsider your position. I am willing to put in the time to find out more so that the people can make a clear and sound decision.

Dig deep CNMI, find that pride in your heart for your islands and your people. Consider volunteering that pride for what you know to be right. Call or write to your representatives to let them know your interests or concerns—us helping them to help us.

With great respect and gratitude,
