Clarification
On behalf of the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, please correct your Sunday, April 13, 2008, article “Wespac to take up Pacific fishery issues-again,” which says “The Council needs to meet again as all the actions taken during the last meeting on Saipan and in Guam last month were invalidated due to a failure to post the meeting with the Federal Register … .” This statement implies that the failure was on the part of the Council. However, the Council followed the usual process of forwarding notice to the National Marine Fisheries Service for posting with the Federal Register but NMFS failed on its part to process the notice on a timely manner. A letter from NMFS acknowledging its mistake can be forwarded to you if you need proof. Moreover, not all the actions were invalidated. The votes pertaining to regulatory actions were revisited at the 141st meeting to ensure that the public had notice through the Federal Register. The Council meeting had also been advertised in publications, through direct mailings, in press releases and other venues.
