Marianas Resort and Spa junior chefs Edgardo Malabayabas and Carlito Equia bested 14 other competitors to win first place in the 2008 Taste of the Marianas Chefs Competition held last Saturday.

With an entry they named “Marpi’s Red Hot Tropical Barbecue Savour,” the two used broiled chuck roll stuffed with chili and fresh herbs to romp off with the top prize in the annual competition.

The win bagged them the $500 cash prize and a certified Angus beef gift package, which included polo shirts, steak, knives, apron, hat and pens.

Malabayabas and Equia said they would use the money to party with their co-workers.

Second place honors went to junior chefs Edgardo Casing and Alfredo Capacio of Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan with their “Summer Island BBQ Delight.” Their recipe called for barbecue ground chuck roll with island fruits and watermelon sauce.

The second place winner gets to receive a $300 value and gift packages.

The third place winners were Richard Santos and Nestor Mosquito of Aqua Resort Club. Their theme was “Saipan’s Pride,” a variation on hinetnon katne (roast beef of chuck roll).

Other participants in this year’s competition were Palms Resort Saipan, Pacific Islands Club, Saipan World Resort and Hyatt Regency Saipan.

The competition judges were Jim Arenovski, Saipan Chamber of Commerce president and Delta Management managing partner; Joe Guerrero, Saipancell Communications general sales manager; Alex Sablan, Saipan Shipping general sales manager; and Marcia Schultz of Carlsmith Ball LLP.

The sponsors for the event were Triple J, Hotel Association Northern Marianas Islands and Marianas Visitors Authority.
