Six netters still perfect in Guam
Six CNMI junior players remained undefeated as the 2008 North Pacific Qualifier entered its second day yesterday at the Rick Ninete Tennis Center in Tamuning, Guam.
Benjie Decena of Tinian followed up his two victories on opening day with wins over teammate Nathan Nutting (6-0, 6-1) and Guam’s William Koo (6-2, 6-7, 7-5) in Pool A of the boys’ 18s division.
Mayuko Arriola and Dina Jones, meanwhile, are lording it over the field in the girls’ 18s. Arriola has a 3-0 record following victories over Marica Otto of Palau (6-1, 6-0) and Guam’s Theresa Rice (6-0, 6-0) in Pool A yesterday.
Jones was more impressive, racking up a 4-0 slate in Pool B after yesterday’s wins over Arlie Bonto of Guam (6-2, 6-0) and Abigail Gbewonyo of Palau (6-1, 6-3).
The CNMI is also doing well in the boys’ 13, led by undefeated Rafael Jones and Jake Lee, who both finished the round-robin draw on top of their respective pools with 3-0 win-loss cards.
Jones followed up his two wins Monday by beating Guam’s Jared Lee yesterday, 6-1, 6-1, in Pool A; while Jake Lee clinched the top seed in Pool B with a tough 6-4, 6-4 victory over Guam’s Cory Morrison.
Thea Minor, for her part, is simply unbeatable in the girls’ 13s after demolishing Guam’s Ashley Nadler, 6-0, 6-0. She had her streak of shutout wins, however, snapped when she “only” won 6-1, 6-0 against Alina Bonto of Guam.
In other results, James Camacho and Woo Suk Cang absorbed their only losses so far in the boys’ 18s Pool A after both succumbed to Guam’s much-improved Michael Tan.
Camacho lost to Tan, 2-6, 6-7; while Chang came out on the shorter end of the stick in his outing against the Guamanian, losing in a tough three-setter, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Russell Buenaventura, meanwhile, lost his first match in Pool B when Koo beat him 7-6, 4-6,4-6.
In the girls’ 18s, Theecel Minor finally won a match when she beat Bonto, 6-1, 6-1. Federated States of Micronesia’s Samantha Arthur earlier gave Minor her third loss, 6-7, 6-0, 3-6.
