Tinian govt on budget: It wants more
The Tinian government says it needs nearly $2 million more than what the Fitial administration has proposed for the island to keep up with its expected economic growth.
Tinian has asked the Legislature for a budget of $8.5 million, an increase from the $6.8 million proposed by the administration.
“This municipality is in the unique position of having to provide service to a rapidly growing population and economy over the next year,” said Tinian Mayor Jose P. San Nicolas.
He noted that the Bridge Investment Group is set to begin constructing its $50-million casino project this month. Another investor, Matua Resort Development Company, has started the permitting process for its golf course and casino project.
San Nicolas added that the projected influx of international flights to Tinian and the planned construction of a “warm base” for the military on the island would require the municipal government to beef up enforcement efforts.
The mayor proposes to spend $6.88 million on personnel costs and nearly $500,000 on utility costs. His budget proposal also includes $1 million to be spent on operational costs at the discretion of the mayor.
The mayor’s submission provides for 290 full time employees. The proposed budget will allow the government to suspend payment for legal holidays and to shut down municipal offices every other Friday. The unpaid holidays and the so-called “austerity Fridays” are expected to save the government some $600,000 on Tinian.
