The local man’amko association has donated $100 for the 3rd Annual Chamorro Conference that will be held on Saipan from Sept. 26 to 27 at the Saipan World Resort.

The committee will now conduct event preparation meetings in the Office of Aging conference room every Thursday.

The conference will focus on efforts to keep traditional Chamorro culture alive by encouraging local youth to learn and speak the Chamorro language. This will be the event’s third year, as well as Saipan’s first opportunity to act as host.

The event was inaugurated in Guam in 2006 and traveled to Rota the following year. Next year’s conference will be hosted by Tinian.

“I think the $100 donation from the man’amko is a great way to start preparing. We know that September may be still far, but the man’amko were really eager and happy; they look forward to this and they were the first one to approach [us] and made the donation,” said Office of Aging director Howard Macaranas.

Man’amko chairman Frank Reyes and the program’s senior citizens were glad to make a donation in support of Chamorro culture, he added

The man’amko donation will go toward the $1,200 needed to cover conference expenses.

“I will be posting out fliers out in the markets today so that the community will know [about the conference],” he added.

This year’s theme is “Teach, Strengthen, Practice.” The logo is a mixture of colorful images, including the traditional canoe, latte stones and a representation of the islands.

“We will be using this logo every year now; only the theme will be changing each year,” he added.

Keynote speakers from Hawaii will be present at the event.
