The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. will not increase the electric fuel rate this month, but it is still at an all-time high. The August electric fluctuating fuel rate is the same as last month’s rate—41.3 cents per kilowatt an hour.

“We won’t have to increase the rates for August. Looks like we are going to be fine. That provides some relief,” CUC executive director Antonio Muna told Saipan Tribune yesterday.

Muna said CUC would not implement a further increase this month, considering that fuel costs have somehow stabilized.

Under the August rates, residential customers will be charged 41.3 cents in electric fuel rate plus 1.6 cents in electric non-fuel rate, for a total of 42.9 cents per kWh for the first 500 kWh.

For those using up 501 to 1,000 kWh, they will be assessed 41.3 cents in electric fuel rate plus 6.6 cents in electric non-fuel rate, for a total of 47.9 cents per kWh.

Residential customers that will consume 1,001 to 2,000 kWh, they will be paying 41.3 cents in electric fuel rate plus 8.6 cents in electric non-fuel rate, for a total of 49.9 cents per kWh.

As for residential customers with over 2,000 kWh consumption, they will be assessed 41.3 cents in electric fuel rate plus 12.7 cents in electric non-fuel rate, for a total of 54 cents per kWh.

These are on top of the fixed customer monthly charges of $5.60 that all residential customers will be paying.

For businesses, they will be assessed this month 41.3 cents in electric fuel rate plus 8.6 cents in non-fuel rate, for a total of 49.9 cents per kWh.

In addition, business establishments must also pay the fixed monthly customer charges of $7.67.

CUC revised its power rates on May 3, 2008, more than doubling the previous rates.

Last June, the fluctuating electric fuel rate was 38.7 cents per kWh.
