Saipan summer sports camp ends
The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs’ sports camp that started in July 22 ended yesterday with a total of 150 children participating.
The camp participants ranged in age from 6 to 12 and each camper was assigned to groups according to age.
The children were introduced to a variety of leisure, health, fine arts, and fitness activities.
For the Day Camp, activities that were offered included talaya throwing, cooking, Tahitian dancing, canoeing, swimming, and community presentations.
For the Sports Camp, activities included tee-ball/softball, track and field, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and badminton.
Organizers of the summer camp said that their goal was to increase self-awareness among participants to create a healthy lifestyle that includes physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual health.
“With the despairing incidences of obesity, heart disease, physical inactivity, and diabetes here in the island, it is our mission to foster a spirit of physical activity and recreation to these campers that they make health and wellness a part of their lives,” said event coordinator Joey Dela Cruz.
The summer sports camp is available every summer.
“The staff members and volunteers were positive role models for our campers,” said Dela Cruz. “They are certified first aid and CPR instructors, certified water safety instructors, and certified coaches.”
