AMP seawall repairs moving forward
Although there were not a lot of them, recent comments from community members about the proposed seawall replacement at Smiling Cove Marina were positive, allowing the National Park Service to proceed with their plans at American Memorial Park.
Community members were asked to review the Park Service’s environmental assessment for the sheet pile wall and leave comments on the NPS Web site. Although there were not a large number of comments, they were in support of the seawall replacement, AMP Superintendent Sarah Creachbuam said.
“I’m happy that people were happy with the proposed sea wall,” Creachbaum added.
Creachbaum said she would have expected more comments if people were not happy with the plan.
“If a lot of people are upset then there is probably a reason why,” she added.
But, she said, if there had been concerns they would have been addressed.
Creachbaum said the Park Service is now waiting to meet with other federal collaborators on the project in order to take the next step.
The goal is to have the wall completed by the end of the year, Creachbaum said.
“We’re excited to get that wall repaired and have things looking nice out there again,” she said.
The government estimates the repair will cost several millions dollars, which AMP applied for from the National Park Service, she said.
