6th Micronesian Police Executives Association meeting begins today
The three-day 6th annual Micronesian Police Executives Association conference will kick off today at the World Resort Hotel’s Taga Hall in Susupe.
The CNMI Department of Public Safety, Commonwealth Ports Authority and the Department of Corrections are hosting the event. The Department of Public Safety hosted the same conference last year.
Newly appointed acting DPS commissioner Santiago Tudela will deliver his opening remarks at 8am, followed by Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, who will welcome the guests and facilitators.
Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said that police chiefs, commissioners and directors from various Micronesian law enforcement entities come together at the annual MPEA conference to discuss issues concerning the region.
Expected to attend today’s meeting are Palau Bureau of Public Safety Director Norvert Yano, Kosrae Division of Public Safety chief Edmond Salik and Guam Police Department Police Commander Col. Joaquin Reyes.
Other expected participants are Chuuk Public Safety Department Director Jimmy Emilio, Pohnpei Public Safety Department director Lucas Carlos, Yap Division of Public Safety chief Christo Fugmow and Republic of the Marshall Islands’ Department of Public Safety Commissioner George Lanwi.
Presenters in this morning’s session will be Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric O’Malley, U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Rudy Kube and U.S. Navy Capt. Ulysses Zalamea.
In the afternoon session, Federal Bureau of Investigation special agents Mike Gadsden, Jim Barry and Joseph Auther will present.
Other facilitators are U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Dan Holcom, Guam Police Department Forensic Science Division operations chief Lt. Manuel Babauta, Guam 29th Legislature Sen. Frank Ishizaki and CNMI Supreme Court Associate Justice Alexandro Castro.
Topics for discussion will include human trafficking, U.S. military buildup, the FBI intelligence process, terrorism in Micronesia and Asia, transnational organized crime, regional drug trends, regional crime labs, the Friends of the Crime Lab Non-Profit project and a discussion on law enforcement perspective.
