Thanks, Alexie!
The Friends of the Marianas Trench Marine Monument would like to acknowledge the contributions of Alexie Zotomayor, editor of The Island Locator magazine, through her article “The Proposed Marianas Trench Marine National Monument: Boon or Bane,” which first appeared in the Locator’s June 2008. The article is well written, objective and was well-received. She was honored last week for her article at a dinner at Marianas Restaurant on Navy Hill.
The Friends of the MTMM have been using reprints of her article as their primary tool and public relations handout in their on-island informational/educational efforts. The article examines the pros and cons of the proposed marine monument in an informed and admirably even-handed approach, which makes it especially useful to those who have not heard of the proposed marine monument.
Zotomayor said she “strived to remain objective and neutral, and present both sides of the argument about the marine monument”—which indeed she did. In the end with all the facts in hand, she said, “she found herself in support of the marine monument.”
The Friends of the MTMM thanked Zotomayor as they ordered another 1,000 copies of the article for use in their campaign to promote the designation of the waters surrounding the islands of Maug, Asuncion, and Uracas as a national marine monument.
Thanks again for your support, Alexie!
