The time to grow thick skin is now!

Wow! Talk about starting a wildfire, referring to the comments section of Marianas Variety online edition regarding my letter to the editor “Banidosu, Aug. 22, 2008.” To clarify, I did not write the piece as a means of inviting the general public or opponents to attack John Bolis Gonzales—I regret this unfortunate mishap. I don’t know John, never met the man, but I’m convinced that John is a classy guy, obviously very proud of his academic achievements and heritage and rightfully so. John, as well as every individual with aspirations to run for public service, understands the consequences of being scrutinized by the public—it comes with the territory. So to John and all other political aspirants, now is the time to grow thick skin if you haven’t already. I wrote the piece in hopes of humbling John a bit as I felt it was unnecessary to advertise his Grade Point Average on his résumé. I understand advertising ones GPA is beneficial when applying for acceptance at a college or university, but I just could not see it belonging in his U.S. Congress delegate URL. That’s my opinion and frankly I’m entitled to it. To John Gonzales and his family, I offer my most sincere apology for this mishap—dispensa yu pot fabot. The irony of this all is my vote was and still is leaning toward John. I don’t expect my vote for John to change unless one of the other 50 or so candidates that are running for the same office do something spectacular to woo my vote. The Chamorro word banidosu is a double-edge sword—depending on the situation it could mean “show-off,” or “proud,” but the line that separates the two meanings is very thin as you can see by the reaction.
Biba Gonzales!
