More than 40 percent of 2008 Marianas High School graduates are planning to attend college this fall.

According to the senior exit survey, 22 percent of students plan on attending college off-island, while 26 percent will attend Northern Marianas College.

“We really do stress academics,” acting MHS principal Karen Borja said. “Even if they are going to work, we stress more education because they will be better able to work.”

Twenty-three percent of respondents plan on working, while 17 percent plan on entering the military, according to the survey. Students that attend NMC might also be working, Borja said. Five percent of students plan on staying home.

Last year, 49 percent of respondents planned on going to college. More students are planning on attending college off island this year—22 percent this year compared to 19 percent last year.

Fewer students are planning on working directly after high school this year, according to the surveys. Last year, 35 percent of respondents said they were going to go straight to work compared to 23 percent this year.
