Let’s give it a try
The other day’s front page of the Saipan Tribune “Bush pushes marine monuments” is really good news! For one, our northern islands’ waters will be protected. Young adults like myself will be able to enjoy the island’s natural beauty and so many others will be able to appreciate our three northern islands.
I’ve read some letters to the editor opposing the idea. But how can we know if we don’t give it a try? Change is good, you know. Most of these writers are old-timers. They know too much about our islands and the waters that surround them. It’s our time now. Our generation wants this monument!
I plan to major in marine biology and study our islands and waters, but I can’t do it on my own. I need young indigenous people to help me with this. I honestly feel it’s the young generation’s turn now. We the young indigenous want a chance to learn about our islands. I want to see it, study it, smell the air around it, feel the waters that surround it, and enjoy the beauty of our islands and waters. I’m sure a lot of young indigenous feel the same way.
Hey, you parents! We are just getting started. Give our generation a chance. Change is good. Let’s all work together to support our marine monument.
