Nine hours of outages since generators were turned on
In the approximately 240 hours that have elapsed since Sept. 12, the date the Aggreko generators were turned on, there have been more than nine hours of power interruptions, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. announced yesterday.
The 9 hours 12 minutes of outages account for approximately 3.8 percent of the 240 hours.
Although CUC has not had to load shed since the generators were turned on, four unexpected outages have occurred at the Aggreko plant as adjustments are made. The four outages totaled 3 hours 45 minutes, according to CUC.
Also, the CUC Power Division Line crew requested emergency power interruptions to address failing hardware, perform emergency line clearing and address uncontrollable circumstances, such as lighting, that affected the system. Friday morning a lightning struck a power pole in Marpi, tripping feeders 4 and 7, Gary Camacho, Power Division manager, said. The field interruption time was 2 hours 35 minutes.
Power Plant 1 experienced two outages since the integration of the Aggreko generators. In one case, mechanical problems on engine 6 caused an outage. Engine 8 also experienced mechanical problems causing an outage. Altogether, the engines were down for 2 hours 52 minutes, according to CUC.
The Aggreko generators were turned on Sept. 12, adding 13 megawatts of power to the island. Two more generators with two megawatts are expected to arrive soon.
Under the $6-million contract, CUC paid Aggreko $1.5 million to ship the generators, and they must pay an additional $504,000 in about three weeks.
