The Saipan Chamber of Commerce this year will again sponsor Student Career Exploration Day on Dec. 3, 2008. The Chamber’s Education Committee has designed this day and many Chamber businesses will participate.

“We believe that it is important to give interested students a chance to experience a ‘day in the life’ of private business, especially as the private sector will be employing more and more of our local workforce over the coming years,” said Chamber executive director Kyle Calabrese.

Student Career Exploration Day on Dec. 3 is also the day of the Chamber’s General Membership Meeting; students will have the additional experience of attending a Chamber meeting and interacting with Chamber members and student participants.

Students will “shadow” employees and owners of Chamber-member companies in positions that run the gamut of work experience: hotel manager, sales and marketing, underwriter, newspaper reporting and photography, accountant, executive assistant, IT manager, baker, laser technician, claims adjuster, auto mechanic, food and beverage director, bank teller, chiropractor assistant, talk show host, and bank officer are just a few of the positions students have shadowed in the past.

The program is open to all public and private high school juniors and seniors. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from their work sites; the Chamber cannot provide transportation.

Application materials—which must be received in the Chamber office no later than 5pm this Friday, Nov. 14—include an application form, high school permission form, and parental consent form. Applications will be considered in the order they are received. Applications must be complete, and both permission slips must be signed—the student/parent or guardian permission slip and the high school permission slip. Incomplete applications will not be considered for the Student Career Exploration Day.

The Chamber office, located in the Family Building in Garapan, on Garapan Street across the Bank of Saipan, must receive original signed permission slips. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm; it is closed from noon to 1pm for lunch. Applications are available at all public and private high schools or can be requested by sending an email to coordinator@saipanchamber.com. (SCC)
