Seven swimmers braved the Saipan Swim Club-organized Eagle Ray Ocean Swim 7K race from Pau Pau Beach to Managaha Island on Nov. 15.

The list include Andrew and Grace Kimball, Lester Lapuz, Junior Pamaran, Michael Moran, Hiroaki Nishio, and Monica Yamaguchi.

The trio of Lapuz, Moran and Kimball moved out of the water first, but 14-year-old Lapuz was the first swimmer to reach the finish line. The three SSC swimmers completed the race in two hours, 22 minutes frame.

The remaining four finished the race in 2:34:00.

SSC coach Mike Blasberg, Derek Chambers, and Izumi Yamaguchi paddled alongside the seven participants from Pau Pau to the fabled island.

“It was a relief to reach the island and meet the support staff with refreshments and food,” Blasberg said. “Great job swimmers and thanks to everyone that helped make the event possible.”

The Nov. 15 Eagle Ray race was SSC’s second this year.

In January, 15 swimmers joined the 7K race with Moran among the top finisher.

The event was dubbed Eagle Ray 7K Ocean Swim because of the prevalence of eagle rays in the route of the swim. Locals and tourists alike call the area Eagle Ray City.

The race is one of the three events SSC had lined up before the year ends.

Yesterday, SSC hosted the 2008 Annual All Schools Championships. Results of the meet will be published in the Saipan Tribune tomorrow.

The last event for SSC before the year ends will be the 5th Annual Jingle Bell Run which will be held on Dec. 10.

The 5K fun run will start at the Garapan Fishing Base and end at the pavilion in Kilili Beach.

Registration is $10.
