Public School System special education teachers will soon have the chance to take online certification courses through Park University.

PSS has signed a contract with Park University that allows any PSS special education teacher with an elementary education degree to enroll in the classes in order to receive their certification, said Suzanne Lizama, coordinator for the Public School System’s Early Childhood Special Education.

The $50,000 contract allows PSS to cover the teachers’ fees related to the course, including registration and books.

Twenty to twenty-five teaches have already enrolled in the certification course, which begins in January. There are five classes and it will take three or four semesters to complete.

Park University also offers bachelors and master’s degrees online, although PSS will not be funding those degrees, Lizama said.
