PIC to race rubber ducks for cancer fundraiser
It’s not the Year of the Duck, but it may as well be when the sports department of the Pacific Islands Club on Saipan releases 2,009 rubber ducks into the hotel’s lazy river on Feb. 21 as part of efforts to help raise money to combat cancer.
The first ever Duck Race for Cancer will be held on that day on Saipan and interested participants may purchase their rubber ducks for the race at just $5 each.
PIC sports manager Lindsey Sosovec said the winner of the race will take home the grand prize of $1,000.
Sosovec said all buyers would also keep their toy ducks after the race.
There are a total of 2009 rubber ducks now for sale.
All proceeds from this event will go to the Marianas March Against Cancer, to be used for helping cancer patients and for research purposes.
During the race itself, the ducks will be launched from the Point Break slide. They will go down the slide and complete one revolution in the lazy river.
The owner of the duck that crosses the finish line first will receive the grand prize.
“This is the first year of the duck race; however, each year the departments at PIC raise money for Marianas March Against Cancer. In the past, we have done coin drives, hot lunches, luminary sales, car washes, bake sales, etc.,” Sosovec said.
Those who want to purchase a rubber duck may visit the PIC sports department for payment and they will be provided a specific duck’s tag number.
Winners don’t need to be present at the race in order to qualify for the grand prize.
