Mayor’s Office used a jackrabbit start to outlast Pacific Islands Club, 16-15, in the men’s division of the 2008 Inter Government/Business Softball League Tuesday at the Capital Hill Ballfield.

The victory was Mayor’s Office first in eight games, while PIC absorbed its sixth loss in seven matches.

Mayor’s Office had an 11-run top of the first highlighted by rightfielder Fred Robert’s grandslam.

Mayor’s Office had four batters going 2-for-2 at the plate in the first inning alone.

PIC also had a strong start making eight runs at the bottom of the first.

In the next five innings, both teams slowed down with Mayor’s Office preserving the win after giving up only one run at the bottom of the sixth.

Mayor’s Office failed to reach home plate in the second and last two innings, but managed to keep the driver’s seat scoring three and two runs in the third and fourth inning, respectively.

PIC moved within two, 14-16, after making two runs in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth. Mayor’s Office shut PIC out in the fifth, but the former cut the lead to one, 15-16, after bottom of the six inning leadoff batter Annes Cappelle scored on a Mayor’s Office centerfielder error.

PIC’s next two batters were beaten to first and Mayor’s Office secured its first win of the season when third baseman John Maratita caught Cole Pritchard’s flyball to leftfield.

Mayor’s Office went 21-for-41 at the plate for a batting average of .513. Curiously, PIC had a better batting average with .568 after hitting 21-for-37, but still lost the games after committing numerous errors allowing Mayor’s Office runners to advance to bases.

DLNR 26, PSS 7

In the first game in the men’s division, Department of Land and Natural Resources needed only five innings to down Public School System, 26-7.

Leftfielder Pete Teigeta went 4-for-4 at bat, scored four runs, and had eight RBIs. He blasted a three-run homer in the second inning, which ended with DLNR ahead by six, 9-3.

DLNR never looked back from thereon, as it drew one homer apiece from Jess Omar and Chris Alepuyo in the third inning. Omar had a two-run homer, while Alepuyo made a solo round-tripper.

DLNR had a breakout game in the third making nine runs to pull away, 18-5, en route to its fifth win in eight games.

PSS dropped to a 2-5 mark losing its third straight match.

Tuesday night’s lone game in the women’s division between Commonwealth Utilities Corp. and Commonwealth Health Center was rescheduled, as per CUC’s request. CUC also played Monday night over at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield.
