Sporting a Greg Norman golf straw hat, former Tinian senator Ray Dela Cruz tamed the greens and fairways of the Kingfisher Golf Links last March 15 to win the Saipan Golfers Association’s March Ace Tournament.

A 15 handicapper, Dela Cruz shot 41 in the front and an improved 39 at the back and finished a stroke ahead of 29 handicapper and eventual runner-up John “Jeffrey” Takai with his net 65.

Takai shot a gross of 96 to card a net of 67.

SGA president Ben Aldan then nipped Martin Sablan for third, clinching the spot on a bogey against Martin Sablan’s double bogey in hole No. 17.

Dela Cruz’s luck didn’t stop after winning the March Ace, as the former senator also scooped the Wana-bees price bag after shooting a birdie in hole No. 12 and recording the longest drive in hole No. 2.

SGA treasurer Joe Sablan triumphed in the longest drive in holes No. 16 and 13.

Joe Aldan, meanwhile, returned after a five-year hiatus from golf and played well, winning the closest to the pin in hole No. 6 as well as posted birdies in holes No. 2 and 6.

J.B. Babauta, Mariano Fajardo, Ray San Nicolas, Martin Sablan, and Frank Rosario each had birdie holes.

Art Guerrero topped the closest to the pin contests in holes No. 8 and 12 and seven-handicapper San Nicolas sunk a three-foot birdie in hole No. 15.

In all, 21 SGA members took part in the March Ace. (PR)
