Unified Basketball Association, Inc.’s inaugural offering, the 2009 Summer Youth Basketball League, will kick off tonight at the Garapan Basketball Court with competitions in three divisions.

The opening ceremony, which will have the traditional parade of teams, will start at 5:30pm. Draws will be held after the opening to determine the teams that will play in the opening day.

UBA president James Lee said three are 13 teams that will play in the youth league.

Division I, which is for 13 to 15 age group, has Rollers A and B, Sonics and Junior Sonics, and Sixers on its list.

Rollers, Kagman Ayuyu, China Town Lil’ Saints, San Antonio Sixers, and Sonics are entered in Division II, which will have players in the 16 to 17 age group.

Division III, which will cater to players in the 18 to 20 age category, has Rollers, Kagman Sparks, and Pink Buns.

Divisions I and II will have a round-robin format in the regular season with the Top 4 teams advancing to the playoffs. The championship duel will be a best-of-three affair.

A double round robin format will be implemented in Division III with the top finisher getting a bye in the playoffs. The last two placed team will then square off in the first round of the playoffs for the right to face the No. 1 seeded squad in a best-of-three title series.

Games in the UBA summer caging will be played every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Two matches will be played on weekdays, while three games are set for Saturday. Division I games will be played first at 5:30pm, followed by either Division II or II matches at 7:30pm.

The league was originally set to kick off last Friday, but UBA decided to push it back to give teams more time to prepare. UBA used the weeklong delay to train its referees and table officials before starting the league.

Lee said they have about 15 people who volunteer to work as table officials and referees.
