The Tan Holdings Brewers laid down the lumber on pennant champion St. Michael’s Angels and took Game 1 of Saipan Major League’s best-of-five final series, 9-4, last Monday at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.

Game 2 goes down tonight beginning 6:30pm at Tan Ko field.

Brewers left the bases loaded to start the game, but ace pitcher Vince Cepeda struck out the side in the bottom frame.

Angels hurler Franco Flores answered and forced Brewers 1-2-3 in the top of the second, but the Angels still left a man at second base in the bottom half.

Both teams went three up and three down in the third and the Brewers finally hit the board with a run in the top of the fourth inning.

Asap Wabol drove in Manny Sablan with a sacrifice fly, but the Angles escaped and stuffed the Brewers with the bases loaded.

The Angels offense stalled again and stranded two runners in the bottom frame and after a quiet fifth, the Brewers shot ahead, 7-0, in the sixth inning off four hits, a fielder’s choice, a bean ball, and errors.

Ton Rogolifoi, Toi Celis, and Sablan all ripped RBI singles; Angels managed a pair of runs in the bottom frame off errors.

Brewers threatened again, but left a man at third base to start the seventh, went on to force the Angels 1-2-3 in the bottom frame.

Brewers’ Byron Kaipat then drove in Celis in the top of the eighth that brought the count to 8-2.

The Angels mustered two runs in the bottom frame off an error and an RBI single by Jerome Delos Santos, but the Brewers got one back in the top of the ninth off an error.

Although he looked a little shaky in the previous two innings, Brewers pitcher Cepeda found some gas in the tank at the end and struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth.

Cepeda did not allow an earned run and gave up just three hits and seven walks with 14 strikeouts.

Notably, the Angels were not happy with the umpiring all night, despite not bagging a base hit until the seventh inning. Meanwhile, the Brewers smashed 13 hits in the game.

Brewers’ Celis batted 3-for-6 with an RBI, two runs, and a stolen base. Kaipat swung 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run, a base on balls, and a hit-by-pitch.
