Straight set wins mark Day 3 of IT&E tourney

Day 3 of the 2011 IT&E Singles/Doubles Badminton Tournament was a short one for 11 players, as they nailed straight set victories at the NMBA Gym at the TSL Sports Complex on Wednesday night.

At Court 1, all five matches were decided in two sets. In the first game, Jerome Malasarte swept Joel Ortega in the men’s C singles, 21-16, 21-12. In the second match, Alma Ortega also needed only two sets to down Irish Pagarao in the women’s C singles, 21-16, 21-16. The third match at Court 1 was another women’s C singles game with Roma Barlao defeating Arlyn Naguit, 21-18, 21-8.

The last two tiffs at Court 1 featured men’s A singles players. In the fourth game, Ferdie Arago whipped Mario Diola, 21-9, 21-8, while Dick Guintu edged Andrew Galvez, 21-20, 21-10.

Over at Court 2, Rodwealth Espana split his men’s B2 matches, losing first to Chris Hilario, 20-21, 18-21, before bouncing back against Aries Cordero with a 21-8, 21-15 victory.

In other games at Court 2, Chris Obaldo survived Kim Boranah in their women’s C singles match, 21-18, 20-21, 21-18, while Noli Santos swept Jerry Balarao in the men’s B1 singles, 21-18, 21-17. Vic Reyes and Ezekiel Macario were also scheduled to play at Court 2 for the men’s B2 singles division, but the game was reset.

At Court 3, only one of the five matches went the distance with Joseph Santos escaping past Edwin Montoya in the men’s B1 singles, 21-20, 21-8, 21-17. In the men’s B2 singles, Roger Vales triumphed over Oh Imbog, 21-18, 21-20, while Panapa was awarded a walkover win over Luis Camacho in the other men’s B2 tiff.

The two women’s singles games at Court 3 resulted in sweeps with Cristy Villaflor topping Merlie Tolentino in the B1 division, 21-19, 21-18, and Michelle Caleon crushing Shirley Kim in the B2 category, 21-15, 21-18.

Action in the IT&E tournament continued last night and games will also be played this weekend.

Each division has a round-robin format in the elimination with only the Top 4 teams advancing to the crossover playoffs.
