Slots for UFO caging still open
The 2011 UFO Inter-Organizational Basketball League is still accepting teams for the midget, juniors, and masters divisions.
UFO president Bong Malasarte said at least six teams have already shown their interests in competing in the juniors division, while four and five squads have signified their intentions in joining the midget and masters categories, respectively.
“We’re hoping to have at least eight teams in each division,” Malasarte said.
The midget category is for U18 players, while the juniors division will feature players in the 19 to 39 age group. Players in the 40-and-over age group must suit up in the masters division.
Entrance fee is only $750, inclusive of a complete uniform for a 12-man roster, a coach, a muse, and team banners. Interested teams are advised to submit their rosters on June 12.
The league is scheduled to open shop on July 10 at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.
Games in the masters and juniors divisions are set every Tuesday and Thursday with teams in Masters playing in the curtain-raiser. Matches in the midget division are scheduled only every Saturday. It will be the first time that UFO will have a separate competition for U18 players.
Last year, UFO featured only games in the masters and open divisions. MAFEA- Ali’i Konflikt won the open division after sweeping 2009 champion MDX-Chow Queen in best-of-three championship affair. In the masters division, Cabalen-Wings Travel prevailed over MAFEA in a winner-take-all finals, 86-85.
