The Sonics held off Mobil’s fourth-quarter rally to pull off a 78-76 win during their game in the 2011 QQ Car Rental Basketball Cup Invitational League on Friday night at the Garapan Basketball Court.

The Sonics now have a 6-1 record to tie Blue Haus in first place. Mobil fell to a 5-3 slate for third place, half a game behind second-running Smart Cagers (5-2).

Trailing at 64-58, entering the final canto, Mobil rallied behind the 15 points of Jun Estolas. However, Estolas fouled out in the closing minutes of the game and Mobil was held to three points in the homestretch, allowing Sonics to save the win.

Mobil jumped in front early, 26-17, behind Marvin Rabauliman’s eight points in the opening quarter. Then Sonics battled back and took the lead at the break, 43-35, as Lerio Pagarao and Jung Wong teamed up for 15 markers in the second quarter.

Mobil hung around in the second half, but the Sonics maintained the lead after three periods and survived the former’s rally in the final canto.

Estolas led all scorers with 26 points, while Pagarao paced the Sonics trio in double figures with 15.

In the first match, Rollers Madness’ Ivan De Vero exploded for 37 points to lift his team to an 85-68 rout of Prospects.

Madness improved to a 2-5 card to place ahead of sister-team Rollers Happiness (0-6) and Prospects (0-7) in the standings.

Manny Matagolai started things out for Rollers, burying three long balls in the first period for their 23-22 lead. Then Madness went ahead, 41-38, at midpoint behind Devero’s 10 points.

Prospects’ defense stepped up the second half, as it contained Madness to just 11 markers to pull within one, 51-52, heading into the last quarter.

However, Madness kicked in high-gear at crunch time, as Devero caught fire in the clutch with 16 points.
