The former wife of the owner of Kevin’s Department Store was arrested on Friday for allegedly breaking into his department store in Chalan Kanoa and stealing $23,300 from the safety deposit box.

Police arrested Zhao Xiaolan, 35, for burglary and theft in Garapan. Bail was set at $25,000 cash.

Preliminary hearing will be on July 5 at 1:30pm. Assistant public defender Richard Miller was appointed to represent Xiaolan. Assistant attorney general Shelli Neal appeared for the government.

Besides the $25,000 cash bail, Superior Court associate judge Kenneth L. Govendo also ordered Xiaolan yesterday to stay away from Kevin’s Department Store and its owner, Ting Jian Tang, also known as Kevin.

Detective Steven A. Castro stated in his report that Tang reported on June 20 a burglary and theft incident at his department store.

Castro said that Tang told detectives that he deposited $1,700 cash into his safety deposit box in his room last June 13. Tang recorded the total amount in the safety deposit box at $23,300.

When Tang opened the box on June 20 to pay his contractor, he discovered that the $23,300 was missing. An undetermined amount of Chinese currency was, however, intact.

Tang told detectives that he discovered from his employees and through the surveillance camera that his former wife, Xiaolan, had arrived at the store and was seen entering the hallway that leads to his room.

The businessman said his room was not messed up and that only his ex-wife knows the location of the keys and how to open the safe deposit box.

During a review of the surveillance camera, Castro said they saw Xiaolan entering the hallway that leads to Tang’s room on June 17 at 2pm. After five minutes, the suspect was seen walking away from the hallway; this time her purse appeared to be bulky.

Tang told police that he and the suspect have been separated since April 2009 when she moved back to China. Tang said he and Xiaolan were legally divorced on March 21, 2011, and that his former wife has a history of taking money from him without his consent.
