The revived Micronesian Basketball Confederation will now implement a registration system to avoid unjust transfer of players from one nation to another.

The system was created after MBC concluded the 2011 U15 Micronesian Basketball Tournament (west division) in Palau last weekend. Guam, the CNMI, and Palau joined MBT’s west division and their players and officials were the first ones to get registration numbers. Yap failed to send teams in Palau. The east division composed of the Marshall Islands, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Chuuk are expected to follow the registration system after they are done with their separate tournament later this year.

According to the website of Palau Basketball Federation, which hosted the MBT, the system “will ensure each member country or state will not lose players to another country or state without giving their permission to other MBC-member nations.” The website added that the registration system will prevent youth players who are already developed by one country from being lured by another nation.

The system will also help ease record-keeping and strengthen MBC’s eligibility rules.

Once a player plays in a Micronesian Basketball Tournament or Micronesian Games, he will be registered on the team entry form. Players in the U18 age group must provide proof of age when they enter a tournament for the first time and this will be recorded so that the player will not have to produce such proof, again. The system will also ensure that players are eligible for the age group they are playing in, according to PBF website.

So far 110 players and officials are registered with MBC.

The registration system is one of the several programs that MBC is expected to implement for the development of basketball in the region. The group was revived last year during the 2010 Micronesian Games in Palau and will also hold tournaments for U17 and U19 age groups before the 2014 Micronesian Games in Pohnpei.
